Easter holidays in Finland
Finland has two national churches, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland (Suomen evankelis-luterilainen kirkko) and the Finnish Orthodox Church (Suomen ortodoksinen kirkko). For the Orthodox Church, Easter is the biggest and most important feast of the year.
Easter holidays in Finland include:
Good Friday (pitkäperjantai) - commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ
Easter Sunday (pääsiäissunnutai) - celebrating the resurrection of Jesus
Easter Monday (toinen pääsiäspäivä) - commemorating the appearance/revelation of Jesus to his disciples
The preceding week which starts at Palm Sunday (palmusunnuntai) is called a silent or a great week. Maundy Thursday (kiirastorstai) which commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles is not a public holiday.
